The Beale Treasure is a legendary hoard of gold and silver that is said to be buried in the mountains of Bedford County, Virginia. The story goes that Thomas J. Beale, a mysterious adventurer, led a group of Virginians to a mine in New Mexico in the early 1800s. They spent years mining the treasure, and then transported it back to Virginia in two wagon trains. Beale buried the treasure in a secret location and created three ciphers to indicate its location, contents, and intended recipients. He entrusted the ciphers to an innkeeper in Lynchburg, Robert Morris, with instructions to open the box only if Beale or his men failed to return within 10 years. One cipher has been solved, which detailed the contents of the treasure. Two others have yet to be solved and were published in an 1885 pamphlet The Beale Papers. The treasure is thought to be worth around $65 million. Ken Bauman has been part of a group that is working to decode the remaining ciphers. Hear more about the ciphers, the progress that has been made and more about this centuries-old mystery.
